Did We Forget Preventative Medicine and Lifestyle?

Mon, 2009-09-14 03:48

After the initial launch of our website we received some interesting feedback from our loyal friends and patients. I'd like to share one particularly interesting comment from one of our employees. The live well page should be geared toward preventative medicine and lifestyle. We should make the comparison to cars. We all know that we must change the oil, do a tune up, rotate tires, etc. on a continuous basis every so many months or mileage to make sure our car works and runs well. And we all do it since we know that if we don't, the engine will break down, we'll get stuck on the side of the road and it will only cost us more to get it fixed later, after much inconvenience and suffering. But for some reason, we do not take care of our own bodies like we take care of our cars! Some people don't acknowledge the importance ("I feel fine, why should we spend time and money to see a doctor?"), some people don't know where to start or who to go to. And some are worried about the expense. However, like the car that will eventually break down if you ignore its symptoms, so will your body. That may mean missing work for sick days, it may mean a hospital stay and the associated expenses. And it may mean something more serious. What it surely means is suffering. If we ignore and procrastinate taking care of our bodies, we will not seek care until we don't have a choice or it is too late. This is a costly, inconvenient and painful way to handle your own healthcare. Unlike a car, if our engine breaks down or we are deemed "totaled" we cannot go to a dealer to find a new body."
